With Love, From a Reader to a Shopaholic

Hello everyone,

Today Sophie Kinsella, author of many novels including the bestselling Shopaholic series, shared a heartbreaking health update. She has shared that she is well and stable now, but it was shocking to hear what she has been going through in the last few years in which she has been away from the public eye.

To say the Shopaholic series changed my life would be an understatement. I began reading it in high school. It was the first time I’d read anything writing in first person that struck me immediately from page one. I was introduced to a new writing style that completely changed the way I viewed reading and which made me fall in love with books again.

Becky Bloomwood is a dynamic character who leaps off the page. From the moment you meet her you can’t help but root for her success. The hijinks she gets into, often with her best friend Suze, are laugh-out-loud funny and ridiculous. Her love interest, Luke Brandon, has charm and wit and a wry sense of humor. Becky’s parents are delightful and endearing as well. Becky’s story takes readers across Europe and even to the U.S. to California and Las Vegas, and is never short on laughs along the way. She is a literary character near and dear to my heart.

Last fall when I moved I was faced with a bookworm’s worst nightmare: having to pare down my personal library to accommodate for being in a smaller space. Of all the books I chose to part with, the Sophie Kinsella novels stayed on my shelf. There was never a question as to whether I would part with them. They had a huge impact on my life as a reader and were a source of comfort through good times and bad. I’ve read each of them more times than I can count and I know I will again someday, because that’s what you do with books you love. They remain a part of your life.

I hope Sophie Kinsella has a speedy recovery and I wish all the best to her and her entire family. Whether or not she chooses to update the public on her health status is entirely up to her, as it should be, but I will think of her often and hope that she recovers soon.
