Harlequin Intrigue Mini Reviews

Hello everyone! I can’t believe it’s already April. The spring holidays continue to fly by and the warmer temperatures we’ve been having in Arizona are reminding me that unfortunately (ha) summer is inching ever closer. I recently read a couple Harlequin Intrigue books for the first time and thought it would be fun to share some thoughts on each. Since I love reading romantic suspense, it will come as no surprise that I enjoyed each of these!

High Mountain Terror by Janice Kay Johnson

Synopsis

“Deep in the rugged Washington mountains, nature photographer Ava Brevick inadvertently takes a picture of a wanted terrorist. His men start an avalanche to killer her, but she escapes – and saves investigating detective Zach Reeves from icy death. As a snowstorn cuts them off, she and Zach challenge merciless terrain to warn authorities. But will trusting each other prove an even deadlier trap?”

Review

This one really surprised me in a good way. I know very little about photography and have never been to Washington state, so I wasn’t sure how much I would be able to connect with this book. However, the technical and geographical details were easy to grasp and I was able to jump right into the story from its very tense beginning. The entire book, which is under 250 pages, takes place over the course of Ava and Zach’s time trying to escape the mountains, so only a few days pass but it really feels like a complete story. They must battle injuries, personal internal obstacles, the elements, and at times their attraction, to work together to make it out alive. Some of the injuries were a bit gruesome but that made it all the more realistic. I would definitely read something by Janice Kay Johnson again.

K-9 Hunter by Cassie Miles

Synopsis

“Piper Comstock and her dog, Izzy, live a peaceful life in the Oregon forest. Until her best friend and his daughter are targeted by an assassin. US Marshal Gavin McQueen knows the truth—a witness in protection has been compromised. Now a gang kingpin wants revenge. Piper vows to help Gavin catch the culprit. But as the danger—and duo—grows closer, is the peril to Piper’s life…or to her heart?”

Review

K-9 Hunter is my first venture into the world of K-9 novels of which I know there are many. Again, this is a field (K-9 search and rescue) that I know very little about, other than what I read in Vanishing Hour by Laura Griffin. This story starts on a light note with Piper going to visit her old friend, and their background is delivered swiftly and in a way that made me invested in the story before anything had even happened. Then, danger strikes and Piper is a potential target for the assassin. Gavin McQueen steps in primarily to protect the daughter of Piper’s friend who was attacked, but because of Piper’s proximity to the attack she must also go with them to seek safety. As with High Mountain Terror, I learned a lot about a new field I didn’t know before. I also loved the Pacific Northwest setting yet again. From what I can tell, Cassie Miles has plenty of other books that I would love to read in the future.

My final verdict is that I will definitely keep Harlequin Intrigue books in mind for future reads!
