The Giver by Lois Lowry

I first read The Giver in seventh grade. Like most people, I was mystified by the ending and it is one I have mulled over for years. While there are four more companion books to this story that supposedly shed light on that infamous ending, I have yet to read them.

The graphic novel adaptation of this classic story is fantastic. It brings the seemingly-perfect world Jonas lives in to life. It follows the original story closely, and the illustrations add to the overall effect of the many details in the plot and Jonas’ complicated character arc.

I am decidedly more likely to read a graphic novel adaptation of a novel I have already read than to jump straight into a graphic novel I have never heard of, sight unseen. Since The Giver is a book many people have read, I would highly recommend revisiting it through this medium for a second go-around.
