Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly series created by Rukky at Eternity Books and hosted by Aria at Book Nook Bits. The full list of February topics can be found here
This week’s topic is about “emergency books.” I know many people who always have a book with them at all times and this topic is perfect for those types of readers.
Do you always have an emergency book with you? What makes a book an emergency book? And what are your go-to emergency books? Do you stick to having physical books on you, or do you prefer to read ebooks and audiobooks while out and about?
I think it’s really nice that people carry books with them wherever they go but I am not one of those people. I read at home or at the library if I happen to be there for an extended period of time.
I am a person who likes to stay present. If I’m driving or out in public I consider it a matter of safety, quite frankly, to be aware of my surroundings and not otherwise absorbed in something that will distract me.
I occasionally listen to audiobooks when I’m driving long distances, but I prefer to focus on driving rather than become absorbed in something that will take my attention away from the present moment.
This may come as a bummer to other book lovers who insist on bringing books everywhere. I think it’s great that people do that and enjoy it. But that’s simply not how I prefer to stay present in any given moment especially when I’m out of the house. Maybe it’s because of how much crime fiction I read 🙂
If I am in a book “emergency” by which I take to mean a situation where I’m either in a book slump or can’t decide what to read, the authors I seek out are Laura Griffin, Elly Griffiths, Janet Evanovich and Alice Hoffman, among others.
I do not usually carry a book but I do have a my Kindle with me. I rarely use it. I do like having it for down time. But I like to people watch and take in my surroundings as well.

In my case, I do carry books occasionally if my bag is huge and I might have free time after some work. Even, I am same like you. I like to read at home. I actually find home to be comfortable place to calmly read at my own comfort level. All relaxed.
Also, bringing a book along everywhere you go needs to stop because it’s just subjective. Some people couldn’t concentrate on public places while some can.

I can’t agree more! Concentrating on a book while I’m out in public is not something I can do. It doesn’t make you any less of a reader, either. Thank you for commenting!
