Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly series created by Rukky at Eternity Books and hosted by Aria at Book Nook Bits. The full list of July topics can be found here.
This week’s topic is What is Your Favorite Reading Format?
This is such a great topic idea because no two readers will have the same answers!
What’s your favorite reading format? Hardback? Paperback? Audiobook? Ebook?
My favorite reading formats in order are…
What makes you prefer one over the other?
I’ve always preferred paperbacks because they are easy to hold, carry, pack in luggage, and they are cheap! I do love a good hardback, especially if it’s a book I have eagerly been anticipating, but they are not my first choice because of how heavy they can be, how much space they take up, and also the fact that they tend to be the priciest option out there.
When it comes to e-media, audiobooks are easier for me to access than e-books because I don’t have an e-reader. When I did in the past, I hardly used it for e-books and just never could get into the habit.
Which do you read the most?
I read paperback and hardbacks the most. I try to get mass market paperbacks whenever I can because they are so small and easy to travel with.
What are the pros and cons of these different formats?
Audiobooks and e-books require a device, which can be considered a downside. Listening to an audiobook doesn’t require as much phone battery as reading an e-book (in my experience) but at the same time I don’t always want to be using a device.
If you tend to use the library for all your reading materials like I do, there is also the downside of there being limited availability with e-books and audiobooks. Recommending titles for the library to buy is always an option but then you never know when they will actually be available.
My preference when it comes to physical books is as much about wanting time away from screens as it is about preferring physical books that I can keep on my bookshelves after I read them. Physical books are more susceptible for the elements, and as such I would never take my favorites on vacation! That would probably be the right time to have an audiobook on hand.
Each format has its pros and cons, and I think most readers will support their favorites no matter what the potential downsides might be.
