What Makes You Pick Up a Book?

This week, I’m doing a previous topic which was What Makes You Pick Up a Book?

Here are some of the things that will make me pick up a book, in no particular order…

At the Library or Bookstore

• An appealing cover
• A thoughtful display surrounding a theme
• A sale – who can resist discounted books? Both at the bookstore and at the library used book section, I always take a moment to browse

Based on a Recommendation

• I will almost always pick up a book that a close friend has recommended
• Lately I have started to seek out books based on author recommendations. It doesn’t always pan out but sometimes you strike gold and find a new favorite author

On My Own

• I read a lot of series, so typically I seek out books that are a continuation of a series I have been reading
• If I read a particularly compelling review of a book here on WordPress or on another platform, it will make me want to seek out that book
• NPR Book Concierge is a source I sometimes go to for book recommendations, as with above, when a favorite author reviews something, that greatly increases my chances of wanting to read that book
• Lists curated by librarians, especially those for e-books and e-audiobooks on Libby/OverDrive (think the library displays mentioned above but even better!) almost always result in my checking out a book from that list
• If I’ve watched a movie or TV show that is based on a book, I’m more likely to read the book, as with Virgin River by Robyn Carr

Those are just some of the reasons I pick up a book.
