Things That Make Me Pick Up A Book

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

I have been dying to participate in one of these weekly memes for so long now and figured the beginning of a new month was as good a time as any to jump in.

This week’s theme is: Things That Make Me Pick Up A Book.

Here we go!

Author

I am much more likely to read a book if it’s written by an author I have already read. Some of the authors whose books I would read without a second thought, sight unseen are: Jojo Moyes, Robert Galbraith, Hazel Gaynor, Sarah Jio, Sophie Kinsella, Ruth Ware, Angie Thomas, among others.

Cover

I will often pick up a book just because the cover is appealing. I will also sometimes purposely avoid a book because I don’t like the cover. Am I allowed to say that? Here are some covers that were love at first sight. As it turns outs, not all books with great covers are great books, and vice versa (shocker!) but that’s the risk you have to take.

Recommendations

I take recommendations with a grain of salt. But there are three cases in which I am more likely to read a book based on the recommendation.

  1. If a close family member reads a book and says I might like it, 99% of the time they are right; family knows you best!
  2. If a professor has recommended a particular book in class or to me personally, I am much more likely to seek out and read that book (see below).
  3. If the book has a blurb on the back from an author I like, it will instantly up my interest level in the book. I recently began a book I was feeling iffy about, but noticed a short review on the back cover from an author whose opinions I respect, and that made me more eager to read it.

Some memorable books that professors have recommended which I have enjoyed are…

So those are the main things that are most likely to make me pick up a book. I really thought that I would be able to make it to ten, but I guess not this time around 🙂

I’ll attempt to continue doing Top Ten Tuesday posts as frequently as possible during the coming months. If you’re participating, link your blog in the comments so I can check out your posts!
